"A run of bets" was positioned for one participant, many at shops in the Ipswich area, the bookmaker stated.

It is not known which baker prompted the flurry or whether any contestants have connections with the Suffolk town.

The very first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday evening.

It is the 6th series of the program, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Each week the amateur bakers are expected to deal with a baking obstacle, with very little instructions, and provide a "signature meal".

'Soggy bottom'

The bookmaker stated a flurry of bets came in for one of the 12 participants whose chances started at 12/1 and were minimized to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.

"We used prices on Monday and, almost before the ink was dry, an uncommon number of punters remained in a rush to back just one candidate," David Williams of Ladbrokes said.

"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the yohaig code exact same one-way traffic. That sufficed to set our alarm bells calling and, as a preventative measure, we suspended our betting.
